Pregnancy & Sex Toys

If you’re pregnant and you’re reading this, chances are you’ve been wondering about whether using your favorite vibrator is safe during the next few months and you’re uncomfortable about asking your doctor. The first thing to say is that you should never, ever be afraid to ask your doctor any question, however embarrassing it might seem – if there’s a moment of pause, your gynecologist will always recover and answer any questions that pertain to the health of you or your unborn child with care and compassion.

That said, here are a few basics:

So long as you are having a normal, functional pregnancy, the things you did beforehand are, by and large, okay to do while you’re gestating. Orgasms are not dangerous to a healthy, normal fetus, though some conditions of pregnancy do require abstaining for the duration. Your doctor will have already had “the talk” with you if that’s the case, however, so feel free to proceed as normal otherwise.

Women are advised to exercise as normal during pregnancy, to eat as normal (though there are a few baby no-no foods), so why should sex toys be any different? Of course, there are a few guidelines to follow. Penetration is fine, but acrobatic positions should probably be avoided, both during standard sex and with the added fun of sex toys. Some women feel fat or unsexy during their pregnancies, or worry that their partners will be turned off, but traditionally nothing could be further from the truth.

Pregnancy is inherently sexy, as the act of growing a child, however it comes about, is beautiful. Spouses are enchanted by the changes in their partners’ bodies, as those bodies are only changing and expanding in the ancient act of creation.

And since your hormonal levels are going to be through the roof, it’s perfectly normal to assume that your partner may not be able to keep up with your needs, particularly when you reach the second trimester of pregnancy, which can often be confused with the raging inferno known as your teenage years.

What does that mean? Even if you didn’t dabble with sex toys before your pregnancy, you might feel inclined to start! Orgasm has been known to lower the stress levels of women and men, and your pregnancy is the most important time of your life to be stress free. You can also have your poor, tired co-parent-to-be give you a little battery operated relief if you’re tuckered the poor devil out.

So just remember, if you’re insatiable during your pregnancy, don’t worry about it – enjoy it while it lasts!
