Sexual intercourse.

It really doesn’t start sounding sexier, does it? Unfortunately most of the technical terms we have for making love break the act down into its basics and end up sounding at best clinical, and at worst like some sort of condition one comes down with.

Fortunately, doing it is a lot more fun than saying it. Sexual intercourse is, at its core, a biological imperative that cuts to the chase, so to speak. There are ways to dress it up – and we’ll dish in a minute – but it’s the main event. Sexual intercourse is what all that foreplay is leading up to – for a lot of us, it’s the reason we bother with foreplay.

For some people, foreplay’s a reward unto itself. But for others, it’s exactly what the word implies – simply a means to an end, meant to build anticipation for the ultimate act of coupling.

As the Kama Sutra teaches, sexual intercourse doesn’t have to be boring. The missionary position is a classic for good reason, but the technical term – sexual intercourse – is meant to describe any and all positions that require penetration. You’ve heard most if not all of the terminology. You’ve probably even tried a lot of it – him on top, her on top, doggie style, standing up, against a wall, in a shower, in the bath, in a hot tub, lying on your sides facing each other, lying on your sides spooned together.

And that’s not all. Sexual intercourse can incorporate any number of wonderfully naughty pursuits. Her tied up. Him tied up. A clitoral stimulator placed between you, buzzing away. One of you wearing a black leather corset. Both of you covered in edible flavored body oil. Or chocolate sauce.

It’s a limitless number of possibilities that somehow all fall under the same heading of sexual intercourse.

Which means if you start thinking of sexual intercourse as more than just the description of inserting Tab A into Slot B, it might actually start to sound a little sexier. After all, nothing that describes all those things could possibly be boring. So try it.

Sexual intercourse. Take a moment and picture your favorite scenario and superimpose those words over it. Let yourself be caramel coated or swathed in leather or holding a whip.

Not so clinical now, is it?
